If you grew up with the 1997 Tamagotchi and you're looking for something equivalent in 2026, there are about six serious options. I built one of them (Clawpet), and I'll be the first to say it's not the right choice for everyone. Here's what's actually different between them.

Where each one wins
Tamagotchi On — for the official experience
Bandai's modern mobile Tamagotchi. Most faithful to the original branding. Marriage + offspring is unique. The downside: $4.99 upfront, IAP for genes, and it's a closed ecosystem. No way to play with friends who don't already own the app.
Tamagotchi Pix Party — for nostalgia hardware
Real device, real screen, real pixel pet. If you want a 1997 experience in 2026, this is it. Costs $60 and you have to actually carry it. IR pairing means social play requires friends in the same room.
Pou — for kids
The most popular pet game on iOS. Free with ads. Aimed at children. No real difficulty curve, no mortality, no social. If you have a 7-year-old, Pou is fine. If you want stakes, it isn't.
Habitica — for productivity
Pet game disguised as a habit tracker. Your real-world tasks feed the pet. Brilliant for some people, completely wrong for others. The "pet" is gamification, not the point.
Aavegotchi / Catizen — for crypto natives
If you want token rewards and you understand wallets, these exist. Both have made real money for some users. Neither is wholesome — the point is yield, not the pet. Aavegotchi requires Polygon ETH and a $50+ floor for an entry pet. Catizen runs on TON and requires a wallet.
Clawpet — for everyone else
If you want a free pet that actually dies if you neglect it, lives inside Telegram (so your friends can play in 1 tap), and has none of the crypto baggage — this is the gap I tried to fill. Built solo in 3 days, open source, hosted on a free Oracle VM, runs as an OpenClaw + Hermes Agent skill so it's also installable as part of any agent runtime.

Pets visit each other. When you share a link to your pet, your friend opens it, sees your pet's stats, and can hit "Befriend." Bidirectional friendship is recorded on both sides. Then you can run a 24-hour-cooldown "playdate" that auto-writes dialogue:

Pets die permanently. If you don't feed your pet for 7 days, it dies. The memorial page activates. There's no revive. There's a "reincarnation" option but it strips all friends, level, and bond scores. The drama is the point.
Server-side ambient interactions. When you have friends, the bot autonomously generates pet-to-pet events on a 6-hour cooldown. You'll log in to find:

4 languages out of the box. The Telegram client tells the Mini App what language the user prefers. We respond in their language: Turkish, English, French, German. Per-species personality dialogue (cat is sassy, dog is hyper, penguin is cool, fish is zen, chick is hyper) — all hand-written, ~120 lines.
What Clawpet doesn't have (yet)

- Does Clawpet really let pets die permanently?
- Yes. Seven days without feeding triggers permanent death. The pet is moved to a memorial page that's still shareable but read-only. There is a "reincarnation" option that starts a new pet of the same species, but you lose all level progress, friends, and bond scores.
- Can I play Clawpet with my friends?
- Yes. Each pet has a shareable visit link in the format
t.me/OpenClawTamagotchi_bot/pet?startapp=pet_USERID. Friends can visit, befriend (bidirectional), and run 24-hour-cooldown playdates that auto-generate dialogue between the two pets. - Is Clawpet a crypto game like Aavegotchi?
- No. Clawpet has no token, no wallet, no NFT, no on-chain anything. It's a free open-source Telegram Mini App built on Python. The whole point of the project is to be the wholesome alternative to crypto pet games.
- Why no install?
- Clawpet runs as a Telegram Mini App. It opens inside Telegram with one tap on a t.me link. Telegram's WebApp SDK gives full-screen access, haptic feedback, and DeviceMotion (for shake-to-hatch). Friction to try the game is one tap, which is the entire pitch.
